Overall:★★

MG Nail is a small, quaint studio located in the basement area of small set of stores on 39th Ave. The space is clean and the staff is nice, but not particularly friendly. With a three person staff and only one nail artist, there is often a wait for walk-ins, but the art quality is worth it. For this amazingly detailed design, the bill was $85 without tip.

STUDIO: ★★

A new condo development is going up across the street from MG Nail, so for now the setting looks grim from the outside. Inside, however, the owners have taken great care to make the basement space both aesthetically pleasing and clean. The staff was generally courteous, but Allison (who was being hands for us this time) was self conscious about having short nails and the technician was almost reaffirming her insecurity. So I’ll take this opportunity to submit a PSA and say that no matter how short your nails are, don’t let anyone, even the technician, tell you that your nails are too short for nail art. I think this case is a testament to that since in the end her nails looked great and she couldn’t have been happier.

Nail Care: ★★

This was Allison’s first time getting nail art (I had been bugging her for some time to try it out), so she did not have any gel on her nails. Therefore I don’t have a sense of their removal technique, however the general cleaning process was very good. Allison has sensitive hands and doesn’t normally get manicures because of it. There was minimal squirming, so I took that as a good sign. Dali and I also both got regular pedicures. There is a little stinging near the cuticle of my right big toe. It’s nothing serious, but it’s there.

ART: ★★★

Although the technician had a little bit of an attitude, I can’t fault her because the art came out freaking amazing. I also will take this opportunity to note to anyone who is unfamiliar with Flushing nail studios that this is not uncommon with technicians from this area. I’m not sure if this is a cultural thing, how like in Hong Kong friendliness in customer service is discouraged (see “McDonald’s in Hong Kong” by James L. Watson), but this has occurred to me more often in Flushing than in Manhattan. It doesn’t mean the service is any worse or that the people are less kind. If you are used to ultra friendly service, I would keep that in mind before you go. Anyway, take a look at the pigs on Allison’s thumb. She even made the little pig raise the roof. It’s like millimeters of spaced packed with an impossible amount of cuteness. Not to mention this took under two hours. We were all stunned and would definitely consider returning.

LONGEVITY: ★

The polish never lifted, because instead it popped right off. I’m talking whole thing, like the polish was a stick on nail. Luckily this was only on two of her nails, and about 3 and a half weeks since she got the manicure, so it was time for something new anyway. We’ve never seen polish pop off before, so that was strange. It made removal a little easier though. Her middle finger on her right hand did chip at around 3 weeks, causing her nail to break which was also a bummer. We’re sticking with three stars because I think for the price, getting three weeks is worth it.
